The first “complete street” project is underway in Old Algiers. Working in tandem with the Complete Streets Coalition, the Department of Parks and Parkways, the Department of Public Works, and Cm. Palmer’s office, we are excited to line the new bike boulevard on Newton Street with beautiful water-loving trees. Newton Street is just a part of the large-scale, opt-out planting we’re continuing in Algiers. SOUL aims to plant another 500 trees in the community this season. If you have suggestions for planting in this neighborhood, please leave your comments and insights here.
This will be the first time that SOUL partners with the Complete Street Coalition, but not the last! Please join us for two teleconferences to get a look at the new biking and walking improvements being planned for the Marigny and Central City. You will be able to voice your opinions and ask questions about the City’s proposed designs, and advocate for trees to be included as an integral part of complete streets. It is a great opportunity to discuss how your streets should be improved with the officials responsible for making it happen.
